Chakra Healing: A Beginner’s Guide To The 7 Chakras (2023)

Written by Harry Bird

What is Chakra Healing?

Chakra healing is a holistic practice that involves balancing the energy centers in the body known as chakras. There are seven main chakras in the body, located along the spine from the base to the crown of the head. Each chakra corresponds to different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

When the chakras are balanced and aligned, energy is able to flow freely through the body, leading to a sense of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. When the chakras are out of balance, it can lead to physical and emotional symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, or low self-esteem.

There are many different techniques that can be used to balance the chakras, including:

  • Meditation: Focusing the mind on the breath or a mantra can help to quiet the mind and bring balance to the chakras.
  • Yoga: Practicing yoga poses can help align and balance the chakras, as each pose targets specific energy centers in the body.
  • Crystals and gemstones: Certain crystals and gemstones, such as amethyst or rose quartz, are believed to have healing properties that can help to balance the chakras.
  • Sound therapy: Using sound, such as singing bowls or chanting, can help to resonate and balance the chakras.
  • Color therapy: Wearing or surrounding oneself with certain colors, such as red for the root chakra or blue for the throat chakra, can help to bring balance to the corresponding energy center..

It is important to note that healing the chakras is not a substitute for medical treatment, and it should be used in conjunction with traditional medical care. It is always important to consult with a healthcare professional for any physical or emotional concerns.

Overall, learning chakra healing is a holistic practice that can help to bring balance and harmony to the mind, body, and spirit. It is a powerful tool for personal growth and well-being, and can be incorporated into anyone's daily routine.

So, let's get into it!

Understanding the chakras

With the influence of yoga, Chakras have also gained popularity in recent years. In addition, the rise of new-age philosophies has also led to the popularity of the chakras. Chakras existed long backdated 1500 to 1000 BC with the origin in India. It was first mentioned in the sacred texts, also known as Vedas which are an ancient text known to offer spiritual knowledge.

Chakras have varied energy system that has been in practice for centuries. There are seven main chakras, although some recognize 114 chakras. However, these seven chakras help in keeping one's mind, body and soul in balance. It is the energy points in a body that should stay aligned and open. These chakras coordinate within the areas of the energetic body that can affect our overall wellbeing.

Types of Chakras

Types of chakras

The human body is believed to have seven main chakras, each of which corresponds to a specific energy center and is associated with its own unique name, color, number, and location along the spine.

In order to effectively heal and balance these chakras, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the specific characteristics and functions of each one.

Each chakra is responsible for governing certain physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being, and when they are out of balance, it can manifest in various physical, emotional, and mental health issues.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of the specific qualities and potential imbalances of each chakra in order to effectively address and heal them.

Lets take a closer look at the 7 main chakras:

1. Root chakra

The root chakra, also known as the Muladhara chakra, is the first of the seven main chakras in the human body.

It is located at the base of the spine, near the tailbone, and is associated with the color red. The root chakra is responsible for our sense of stability, security, and physical strength.

When it is balanced and aligned, we feel grounded and connected to the present moment. However, if the root chakra becomes blocked or imbalanced, it can manifest as physical issues such as constipation, colon problems, and arthritis.

To address these issues and maintain overall physical and emotional well-being, it is important to open and align the root chakra through various chakra healing techniques such as meditation, yoga, and crystal therapy.

By working on the root chakra, we can cultivate feelings of security, stability, and grounding in both our mental and physical states.

2. Sacral chakra

The sacral chakra, also known as the Svadhishthana chakra, is located below the belly button and above the pubic bone.

It is associated with the color orange and is related to creativity, pleasure, and sexuality. When the sacral chakra is blocked or imbalanced, it can manifest as physical issues such as lower back pain, urinary tract problems, and impotence.

Emotionally, an imbalance in the sacral chakra may manifest as issues related to self-worth, particularly in regards to creative expression, pleasure, and sexual identity.

In order to maintain balance in this chakra and address any related physical or emotional issues, it is important to work on aligning and opening the sacral chakra through various chakra healing techniques such as meditation, yoga, and crystal therapy.

3. Solar Plexus chakra

The third chakra, also known as the Manipura chakra, is located in the upper abdomen around the stomach area. It is represented by the color yellow and is associated with feelings of confidence and self-esteem.

When the Solar Plexus chakra is blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to physical issues such as eating disorders, indigestion, ulcers, and heartburn.

This chakra is also known as the core chakra and is connected to our sense of personal power.

In order to maintain balance in the Solar Plexus chakra and address any related physical or emotional issues, it is important to work on aligning and opening this chakra through various chakra healing techniques such as meditation, yoga, and crystal therapy.

4. Heart Chakra

The fourth chakra, also known as the Heart chakra, is located at the center of the chest.

It is associated with the color green, which symbolizes love and compassion. The Heart chakra is the central chakra of the seven chakras, and it is responsible for bridging the connection between the upper and lower chakras.

This chakra represents one's ability to love and connect with others. If the heart chakra is out of balance, an individual may experience feelings of isolation, insecurity, and loneliness.

Physical health issues such as asthma, weight issues, and heart problems can also be caused by a blockage in the fourth chakra.

5. Throat Chakra

The fifth chakra, known as the throat chakra, is associated with communication and is represented by the color blue.

It is connected to verbal communication and plays a vital role in how we express ourselves. When the throat chakra is blocked, it can lead to problems in the throat and its surrounding areas, such as issues with the gums, mouth, voice, and teeth.

In addition to physical blockages, this chakra can also be blocked by negative behaviors such as gossiping, reckless talking, or not expressing one's thoughts and feelings.

When the throat chakra is properly aligned and functioning, an individual will feel compassion and understanding while talking and listening, and will also have confidence while speaking.

It is important to keep the throat chakra balanced in order to effectively communicate and express ourselves.

6. Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra, also known as the brow chakra, is located on the forehead between the eyes.

It is associated with the color indigo and is connected to intuition, imagination, and the ability to see the bigger picture. When this chakra is open and aligned, an individual may experience improved intuition, an increased ability to learn new skills, and a stronger connection to their inner voice.

However, when there is a blockage in the third eye chakra, it can manifest as physical symptoms such as headaches or hearing problems, and may also cause difficulties with concentration.

By working to unblock and align the third eye chakra, an individual may be able to tap into their innate intuitive and imaginative abilities.

7. Crown Chakra

The seventh chakra, also known as the crown chakra, is located at the top of the head and is associated with the colors white or violet.

It is connected to intelligence, awareness, and spirituality, and serves as a bridge to an individual's sense of purpose in life. When the crown chakra is open and aligned, it can help to keep the other chakras open and balanced as well, leading to a sense of inner peace and bliss.

However, when the crown chakra is blocked, an individual may exhibit characteristics such as stubbornness, skepticism, and narrow-mindedness.

It's important for all of the chakras to be functioning properly in order to achieve overall balance and harmony in the mind, body, and soul. Each chakra is associated with a specific energy point that performs a unique role in maintaining this balance.

So, now that we've covered each of the seven chakras, lets take an in depth look at how to heal the chakras below:

How to Heal Your Chakras

How to Heal your Chakra

Now that you have an understanding of the seven chakras, let's delve into the practice of chakra healing. It is essential to maintain balance in the chakras in order to achieve overall well-being. Unfortunately, life can often bring challenges and situations that can disrupt the balance of our chakras, leading to the accumulation of negative energy and resulting in physical, emotional, and mental distress.

To maintain a clear and balanced energy system, it is important to take time to meditate and focus on the chakras, as well as to open the heart and mind to new experiences. The shifting or blockage of the chakras can often be traced back to past pain or trauma that has been stored within them. In order to fully heal and balance the chakras, it may be necessary to confront and release these difficult emotions.

There are numerous methods available for healing the chakras, including self-care practices such as meditation, yoga, journaling, and the use of crystals. It is important to find the approach that resonates with you and feels most effective for healing and balancing your chakras. Here are a few tips to help you on your journey of chakra healing:

Next we'll be taking a look at Crystals! Chakra Healing Crystals can be a powerful tool in the practice of chakra healing.

Each crystal has its own unique energy and healing properties, and certain crystals are believed to be particularly effective for balancing and aligning the chakras.

For example, amethyst is often used to balance the crown chakra, while rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra. To use crystals for chakra healing, you can place them on or around the body in the area corresponding to the chakra that you wish to work on.

You can also hold a crystal in your hand or place it on your chakra during meditation to help focus and amplify your intention. Some people also find it helpful to wear crystals as jewelry or carry them with them throughout the day to maintain a constant connection to their healing energy.

Below I've listed the seven chakra healing crystals for each of the seven main chakras that you can use in your healing practice:

  • Amethyst: Crown Chakra
  • Rose Quartz: Heart Chakra
  • Citrine: Solar Plexus Chakra

Next we'll take a look at an age old practice that is used by different societies throughout history in order to clear away bad energy and imprive their own spirtual health - Smudging.

3. Chakra Smudging

Smudging

Smudging is a traditional cleansing ritual that involves the burning of sage, an herb from the salvia plant family.

It has its roots in the practices of Native American cultures, where it was often used by shamans for wisdom, healing, and longevity.

The smoke produced from burning sage is believed to help clear negative energy and negativity, making it an effective tool for purifying physical spaces and the auric field.

In addition to its cleansing properties, smudging can also be used to benefit all seven chakras, the energetic centers of the body that govern different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

By using smudging to cleanse and balance the chakras, we can create a positive aura around us that promotes feelings of peace and clarity, and helps to keep our minds and bodies in a state of ease and balance.

Here's a list of things you will need, plus some instructions to help you get started with smudging:

  • Find a quiet, well-ventilated space where you can safely burn the sage. It's a good idea to open a window or door to allow the smoke to escape.
  • Place the abalone shell or heat-resistant bowl on a stable surface. (Check out this stunning soaptone smudging bowl)
  • Light the sage with a match or lighter, holding it at a 45-degree angle so that it catches fire easily.
  • Once the sage is burning well, blow out the flame so that it continues to smolder and release smoke.
  • Hold the sage in your dominant hand and use your other hand to fan the smoke over your body, starting at the crown of your head and working your way down to the feet.
  • As you move through each chakra, focus on the corresponding area of your body and visualize the smoke clearing away any negativity or blockages.
  • When you reach the feet, turn around and repeat the process on the back side of your body.
  • Once you've completed the smudging, place the sage in the abalone shell or heat-resistant container to safely extinguish it.
  • Take a few deep breaths and sit with the feelings of clarity and calm that the smudging has brought about.

Remember, smudging is just one tool that can be used in chakra healing – so make sure you are covering all bases whilst performing your practice, such as meditation, visualization, or the use of crystals.

Experiment with different approaches and trust your intuition to find what works best for you.

I have found it works great when performed occasionally, especially before meditating, which brings us to our most important chakra healing practice yet - Meditation.

3. Chakra Healing Meditation

One of the best ways to clear and balance your mind, body and soul is through practicing chakra healing meditation.

There are many different styles of meditation you can try, such as mindfulness meditation, breath awareness meditation, or mantra meditation. No matter which style you choose, the key is to find one that resonates with you and makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.

As for how long to meditate for, it's generally recommended to start with shorter periods of time (e.g. 5-10 minutes) and gradually increase as you become more comfortable with the practice. It's also important to be consistent – try to meditate at the same time each day, if possible.

So, are you ready to get started with your chakra clearing meditation practice? Here are some simple steps to follow:

  • Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can sit or lie down.
  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of your body.
  • Bring your attention to the area of your body associated with the chakra you want to work on (e.g. the base of the spine for the root chakra).
  • Imagine a glowing ball of light at this point, and visualize it growing brighter and more vibrant as you continue to breathe deeply.
  • Continue to focus on the light and the breath for as long as you like, allowing any thoughts or distractions that come up to pass by like clouds in the sky.
  • When you're ready to end the meditation, slowly open your eyes and take a moment to sit with the feelings of calm and clarity you've cultivated.
